An Old Naturopath’s Musings…. on all things health : mind body and soul :)
Written by Colleen Cheketri
Auto-immune
POST VIRAL SYNDROME = MYALGIC ENECEPHALOMYELETIS = CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME
This is a subject very close to my heart, particularly because of my compassion for my fellow human being. I see these syndromes or set of symptoms being mistreated or just "managed".
No, Omega 3 , a magnesium powder and an adrenal tonic, is barely going to take the edge off!!! And, NO, leaky gut, is not the cause of your body's autoimmune behaviour, but is simply aggravating it by adding "fuel to the fire" ! Ouch! :(
And most importantly, this seems to affect those of us who have been under long term stress and caught in the cycle of over achieving or what I call Hyper Functioning.
Long term stress, or even an extreme or sudden shock or trauma, will immunocompromise you and leave you open
to a “viral” infection. This is what will always precipitate myalgic encephalomyelitis.
we have to:
1. acknowledge the individual constitution and life story
2. with this information, then tailor an anti-inflammatory LIFESTYLE not just diet! but diet is also a big part.
3. switch off the immune system, or "normalise" the immune system with specialised homeopathics,
herbals and nutrition.
Viruses such as epstein barre, ross river, cytomegalovirus, herpes complex of viruses, coxsackie, hepatitis B, viral mumps and rubella, are all the trigger. Or a bad reaction to a v ac cine. You may not even know you had any of these until you look for them. You would have just gotten a bad flu or virus, shakes, shivers, fever and bedridden for two weeks at least. Felt complete exhaustion and the exhaustion never went away.
Then, years later you are in pain and suffering from many mystery symptoms. And, unfortunately, doctors and even other natural health care practitioners, simply try and manage. or don't even fully acknowledge what is happening immunologically and biochemically to your body!
To confirm that you have an autoimmune behaviour, not always a diagnosable disease, catching the behaviour early is key to stopping it from becoming severe.
Blood tests to do include :
ANA – autonuclear antibody
Ds DNA Ab – double stranded DNA Ab
RF – Rheumatoid Factor
CRP – C- Reactive protein
ESR = erythrocyte sedimentation rate
If you suspect or have thyroid dysfunction, please test to see if it’s an autoimmune disease: Thyroid Antibodies – thyroglobulin, Thyroid Ab
So a combination of stress, viruses and an acidic diet (meat, sugar, caffeine, tea, junk foods etc) at varying levels, creates an autoimmune behaviour which would have different levels of extremity in each individual.
I do not have an expensive "program" or products for this, I simply acknowledge you, in an in depth naturopathic consult and create the perfect treatment plan for you to get yourself back to homeostasis = balance!
Plant Based
There are so many diets going around, right? The Keto diet has made a comeback in the last 12 months after 8 years of being dormant, while Paleo took over, I guess Paleo has become boring while certain celebrities took many financial gains from meat and supermarket corporations to promote this... and now the liver king!! Liver was eaten occasionally, in the “olden days”, about once a month, as excess organ meat will give you vitamin A and copper toxicity .
Paleo and Keto aren't much different, both promote high animal protein and fat intake and make carbohydrates and sugars the enemy. If you cut out your junk food and follow a simplified diet, hopefully you will lose weight and feel better somewhat! But these diets cause chronic inflammation and acidity in the body, and are dangerous to stay on long term, which I will explain soon.
The keto diet itself, originally designed for children with epilepsy, could not be maintained longterm because of the negative effects it had on their health. as a side note, medical cannabis oil, has been extremely successful in managing epilepsy , with no ill effects.
There have been no long-term studies or observations done on high long-term animal product consumption except the masai, inuit (did not cook their meat) and "caveman" , none of whom live past 40 - 60 years of age.
And bone broth??? American Indians, Africans and indigenous Australians did not have pots to boil bones and make broth.
I could talk about all the fad diets that have come and gone in my 30 year career in natural medicine...I am a truth seeker! and its not just about being plant based/alkaline but there are many other factors to consider with diet and lifestyle medicine, which when applied to the unique individual presenting, is when you get successful healing.
I am making a point of saying "Plant based", instead of Vegan, because :
Veganism is a lifestyle choice: causing as little harm as possible to the planet and her creatures, and ultimately our fellow man. Vegans do not eat anything that comes from animals, nor do they wear wool or leather etc. Anything or anywhere like zoos, where animal slavery and death is involved.
I am a naturopath, so I will stick to the diet and food topic hence: Plant based
Why Plant based? That goes against all mainstream information from the media (KFC and McDonalds, the meat corporations are bigger than the mining corporations!) etc dieticians, nutritionists, even naturopaths....
The blue zone groups are the longest living humans in our current times and live without disease, none of our biggest killers : cardiovascular, cancer and diabetes.
The blue zone peoples average lifespan is 100 - 110, they are not on any medications and they are still active.
They are all plant based!! ( they don't know what that means ) meat and dairy are luxuries. They have no access to supermarkets. they eat grains, legumes and local fruit and vegetables. A high fibre, alkaline diet. And they eat one main meal a day. They usually have a religion or culture that involves fasting, and most importantly, close communities and family bonds. most of them eat some meat, very little to no red meat, local milk products, handmade, usually from goats or sheep, in small portions and occasionally, that is local.
So what is the problem with excess or daily consumption of meat and dairy?
Here are the biochemical reasons, that we have discovered so far:
all animal products create acidity and ammonia in the body, if these become excessive, it causes inflammation and therefore states of disease.
RED MEAT ( beef, lamb and pork ) contain Neu5GC a carcinogenic acid to humans, humans cannot metabolize this, and it stores in our body. Our immune system reacts to this.
Excessive arachidonic acid, found almost exclusively in eggs, meat and fish are pro-inflammatory, immunosuppressant, creates chronic inflammation, and causes blood thickening
Meat also contains the stress and reproductive hormones of the animal, both natural and added.
Meat and dairy are high in saturated fat, methionine and IGF-1 growth factor, all promoting cancer and cardiovascular disease in humans.
Casein in dairy is a known carcinogen. Dairy milk also contains caeso-morphine, an opiate like substance which is addictive!
When you cook meat it becomes mutagenic/carcinogenic. Carnivores do not cook their meat and have completely different digestive systems to humans.
The Inuits and Okinawans eat raw fish, if you cook cold water fish you have destroyed the omega 3. The Inuits lifespan traditionally is between 50 and 60 years old. They had access to little vegetation.
Processed meat e.g. salami, sausages etc are known carcinogens, on par with smoking
Chicken and eggs contain HUMAN IDENTICAL ESTROGEN. And arsenic. Eggs were a luxury in ancient times. You couldn't steal all the native eggs otherwise you would destroy the ecosystem!
The myth of the Paleo man only eating meat, is exactly that! a myth. sometimes it would take them days of trying to hunt down an animal with spears etc! They certainly weren't sitting down to eggs and bacon every morning or chicken and steak for lunch and dinner! They had to forage and eat the seasonal fruits and root vegetables and other vegetation.

What is it to be a Naturopath?
Most people don't truly understand what a naturopath is and what their degree entails:
A naturopath studies 3 - 4 years in herbal medicine, nutrition, diet therapies, flower essences, aromatherapy etc as well as topics in anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, clinical diagnostics, pathophysiology, biochemistry, physical examination. and everything in-between!
Naturopaths are medical herbalists, nutritionists and dieticians all in one !
All of these studies are EVIDENCE AND MEDICALLY BASED.
All TGA approved herbs and nutritionals have been clinically trialled and are continually clinically trialled and analysed for their vast array of actions in the body.
Naturopaths really are preventative health specialists.
They cannot legally practice without being registered and insured with a government approved registration body.
Colleen, herself, graduated with a Diploma of Applied Science in 1995, then did an Advanced Diploma in 2004, and is now completing her Bachelor of Health Science as the bachelor was not approved in the “olden days” J
Needless to say, naturopathy ,which is still not integrated into orthodox medicine, has been in a state of evolution with its certification.
Colleen is very different kind of naturopath though, as she leaves prescriptions til last, and if possible, none. She treats and challenges diet and lifestyle habits and makes this your first medicine. Sometimes just tweaking someone’s diet or lifestyle choices, so that it suits their individual constitution, can be all it takes to get you well.
Colleen not only employs herbal medicine, homeopathy, iridology, food and lifestyle prescriptions and guidance, but also incorporates ayurvedic, Chinese dietetics /energetics and blood type into her naturopathic health coaching
So don't be scared that she will be selling you multiple supplements!!!
At the same time, be prepared to be challenged on your current habits and belief systems around health, even if you think they are healthy, they just may not be right for you.
And, sometimes, there is definitely a place for prescription to get you back on track and undo any damage and imbalances that is in action in your body, as we apply changes in diet and lifestyle and emotional well-being.
Colleen has been a registered and insured naturopathic healthcare practitioner since 1995.
